Ice
dams and icicles are part of the dangers that exist when living in
snow country. Ice dam problems ruin shingles, pull off gutters and
cause expensive leaks and other water damage to your home. Ice dams can also be dangerous as the break loose and fall to the ground.
How Ice Dams Are Formed
Ice Dams are formed when heat escaping from the warm rooms below, or from sun exposure above, connects with snow and ice build up. The snow and ice sections melt and drip down your roof until they hit the eave or overhang of your roof. Because the overhang is cold, the water re-freezes creating a dam. This dam holds back any other water dripping from above which eventually results in a pool of water. This pool goes through the freeze thaw cycle over and over again generating large ice formations that eventually penetrate your shingles and melt into your home. Left alone, the dams will eventually grow over gutters and form dangerously large icicle. As the roof ice dam melts, it often breaks loose bringing down ice, water, and your gutter.
